Onboard Cameras/Event Recorders

Improving Fleet Safety and Efficiency with Technology

Onboard Event Recorders

ICSA members are required to have forward-facing event recorders, whether they are already installed or purchased as an ICSA member. Cameras can be from any of four approved companies.* Members who do not already have a camera may purchase one through ICSA at a discounted rate not normally available to small fleets.

In our experience, event recorders make good drivers even better! Our approved camera companies don't just provide the videos you need to coach drivers or improve your own driving, but also give you access to extensive video analytics. Event recorders ensure drivers operate more safely, reduces accidents and make it easier to defend a claim.

*The four currently approved companies are Netradyne; Motive; SmartDrive; and Samsara.

More Reasons to Have a Camera

  • Event recorders provide clarity when an accident occurs, especially when other parties are at fault. They offer clear evidence of what really happened and can help prevent false claims.

  • Access to real-time driving footage that can be used for driver coaching with ICSA's safety consultants. Reviewing the videos helps identify areas where drivers can improve.

  • In the event of a claim, having clear video evidence can prevent costly settlements or unnecessary payouts.

  • Cameras help promote a culture of accountability, ensuring your fleet remains compliant with internal guidelines, external safety regulations, and ICSA membership requirements.

Utilizing Camera Data

ICSA encourages members to login to the camera vendor platform daily to review any flagged events for personal knowledge on how your business is performing. Use your camera videos to identify and fight driver complacency which will improve overall performance. Cameras play a large role in protecting your drivers by capturing real-time footage of road events, which in turn helps mitigate risks and provide evidence in case of disputes.

The data collected by event recorders can be used to optimize fleet operations. These insights help in making informed decisions that improve route planning, reduce fuel consumption, and enhance the overall efficiency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions about Event Recorders/Cameras with ICSA

ICSA members agree to drive professionally and safely. If there is a triggering event and an event is uploaded, we expect that it will be reviewed by the driver and/or a constructive conversation about the event discussed with the designated manager and changes made to improve driving behaviors.

The event recorders have a GPS system installed. The exact location of events recorded is saved but the system cannot be used to track the truck in real-time.

When properly installed, the event recorder usually works when the vehicle is in operation.  However, more than 90% of the recordings never leave the event recorder. An event is only saved and downloaded when a triggering event such as a hard brake or excessive speed occurs, or the driver touches the button on the camera.

If you have been involved in a collision, chances are that the camera will have recorded an event.  To be on the safe side, ICSA recommends that the driver push the button on the event recorder within seconds of the event to ensure that video evidence of the event is preserved.  This will ensure that the carrier has the necessary proof to protect itself and the driver, the driver’s CDL and clean driving record.

Should an event be uploaded and forwarded to you or your manager, please take the time to watch and discuss the event. Just like an NFL Quarterback reviews video clips on the sidelines to perform better the next time he steps on the field; ICSA advocates the use of event recordings to help professional drivers improve driving skills and decision making.  Our mission is to help professional drivers go from good to great, or great to exceptional.
